stonfo hackle pliersStonfo Soft Touch Ring Hackle Pliers work well for applying hackles to hook sizes #16 and smaller. I use it to apply parachute hackles on smaller flies. It is light and easy to use. The tension on the gripper is light enough that smaller hackles will pull out before breaking, yet strong enough to complete the hackle wrapping. It takes a little time to get used to pulling lighter so as not to pull out the hackle. Once you get that down, it works like a charm. I highly recommend this tool for applying small hackles to flies.

  1. It always seems that our tools are evolving and change can be driven by many bright minds in engineering fields for other things. It looks like a very nice bench tool ! I’m not an inventor but I have been using electrical test clips I found at the local electronics store for a couple of decades now and It’s nice to see people looking to improve our fly tying addiction and tool selection as well.

    1. I’ve heard of using electrical test clips Dan, and that they work great. Myself, I have numerous hackle plier types from J.Stockard, and like them each a lot for various jobs…but I also quite frequently use a wooden clothes pin that I long ago whittled down to a narrow snout. Back 40+ years ago it was my first hackle plier, and the wood grips delicate things really well without damaging anything–even single strands of peacock herl. Yet at the same time nothing ever pulls out. It looks ridiculous, and I hide it when I take bench-top photos to post, but it works so well I’ve never retired it, despite adding others to the tool collection.

A little innovation can go a long way on the tying bench. Necessity is truly the mother of invention. : )
